• Henry Fleuss develops a self-mixing rebreathing system in 1878
• Drager develop simple rebreathers in 1911

Early Rebreather Diver

• Siebe Gorman develop the Fleuss-Davies rebreather in 1914.
• Much work done on diving and mine rescue rebreather to WW II.
• World War II sees the development of military oxygen and nitrox rebreathers by the British, German, Italian and American Navies.
• Haldane and Donald do much work on oxygen toxicity in England during this period.
• Post war development concentrates on mixed gas rebreathers.
• Hans and Lotte Hass use rebreathers in Mediterranean during war years.
• British cave divers use ex-military oxygen and nitrox rebreathers in Wookey Hole and elsewhere during the 40's and 50's.
• In the 60's and 70's rebreathers are increasingly used for commercial saturation bail-out systems.
• Some scientific use, but restricted by depth and expense of early units.

Kanwisher and Stark 'Electrolung'

• Bill Stone develops Cis Lunar system for deep cave and EVA system.
• Biomarine MK 15's used for underwater natural history filming and for bio-collection work by marine biologists in late '80's and early 90's.
• Mixed gas rebreathers used by Andros Project in 1987 and 1989 to explore and research Bahamian caves.
• Development of nitrox as recreational breathing gas paves the way for recreational rebreather use.
• Improvement of complimentary material (sensors, computers, software, etc.) makes rebreathers more viable.
• 1995-6 - recreational rebreathers appear on market : Drager/Uwatec Atlantis i, Fieno Grand Bleu, etc.
